EUIPO Expands Global IP Ties with China and Japan

This September, the EUIPO set out to strengthen global partnerships on intellectual property (IP) — giving European businesses more certainty when protecting their ideas, brands, and designs abroad. With China and Japan hosting two of the world’s biggest IP offices, these new ties are a big deal for anyone looking to grow. The message is clear: IP systems are becoming more connected, and the EUIPO is working to ensure European innovators can thrive within them.

Stronger Protection for EU Businesses

From 10–13 September 2025, EUIPO leaders met with top officials in China and Japan. The aim? Make IP systems easier to navigate across borders. For EU companies, this means clearer rules, stronger protection against counterfeiting, and fewer headaches when registering trademarks or designs overseas. In short: more confidence to take your brand international.

What’s Changing in China and Japan

In Beijing, the EUIPO marked the close of the long-running IP Key China project, which has supported action against counterfeiting and improved dialogue with Chinese authorities. Meetings with CNIPA leaders and industry groups also looked ahead to the next phase of cooperation.

In Tokyo, the agenda focused on practical collaboration with the JPO and user associations, paving the way for the first EU–Japan IP cooperation project. This includes initiatives such as webinars comparing EU and Japanese design systems—giving businesses clear insights into how to protect their creativity overseas.

A Bigger Picture

By tightening links with China and Japan, the EUIPO is setting the stage for global alliances in areas like AI, green innovation, and IP-backed financing. For businesses, that means less red tape and more reliable systems wherever you grow.
