The Global Crackdown on E-Commerce Fakes

As online shopping keeps booming, so does the dark side of e-commerce: counterfeit goods. This month, global experts gathered in Spain to tackle the growing wave of IP violations threatening brands, governments, and consumers worldwide.
One Stage, 57 Countries: A Shared Mission
In early October, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) hosted a two-day event in Alicante that brought together participants from 57 countries — from customs and law enforcement authorities to e-commerce platforms and even a major payment provider. Their shared goal? To strengthen global cooperation in stopping counterfeit goods before they reach consumers. The event also introduced a new IP Enforcement Detention Dashboard — a visual, interactive tool developed with the European Commission to track how fake products move across borders and into the EU market.
Platforms, Payments, and Partnerships
The fight against counterfeits is no longer just about border control. E-commerce giants and payment providers are now crucial allies in spotting and shutting down fake listings before they spread. During the event, five major platforms shared how they identify suspicious sellers, while law enforcement from across the world compared strategies for tackling online IP crime.
Smarter Cooperation, Safer Commerce
A panel on Enhancing Cooperation and Intelligence Sharing wrapped up the event with a clear message — the more we share data and expertise, the harder it becomes for counterfeiters to hide. From customs officials to global e-commerce leaders, everyone agreed that the future of brand protection lies in smarter, faster collaboration.
